Sounding Professional

In the business world, keeping things professional is really important. Probably, a business meeting is a situation in which, sounding professional matters the most. In this lesson, we’ll look at some useful expressions to manage a meeting.

A business meeting has three main phases:

(Main titles and bullet points are written on the board. The instructor explains each shortly)

1) Opening a meeting:

- Introducing a colleague (someone you work with)

I’d like to introduce you to Susan who is our Marketing Manager.

- Asking for a business card

Could I have/get your business card please?

- Let’s start (talking, the meeting, discussions etc.)

Let's get down to business.

- What should we focus on first?

What are our key priorities?

2) Brainstorming and talking about plans:

- Introducing an idea

I’d like to propose that we have an extra day off for the New Year!

- Explain what you mean by that?

I'm sorry, but could you please clarify?

- I'd like to know what you think about this.

I'd like to hear your opinion/ thoughts about this.

- Having an idea to offer (to bring an idea to the table)

She brought an interesting idea to the table regarding reducing production cost that I really think we should follow up on.

- Not everyone agrees about this.

There is no consensus on this.

- About Jim’s project

With regard to Jim's project - let's leave that for the next meeting.

- Talking about big changes

Digital media is dramatically changing the marketing world.

- Change for the better in the months ahead

We expect this to turn around.

3) Closing a meeting:

- Ending a meeting

Well, I guess that will be all for today.

- Expressing thanks

So thanks for clarifying the terms of the contract.

- Follow-up; actions to take, giving a deadline

I’ll review the contract again, and send you an e-mail about my decision by the end of this week.

Of course, these are just the first steps. The more you practice, the better you will become.
