Past Perfect Continuous

Past Perfect Continuous is used to show that something had been happening for a period of time before something else happened.

I had been playing

I had not been playing

I hadn’t been playing

Had I been playing?

Examples:

I was tired. I had been playing tennis for 2 hours.

He turned off the TV. He had been watching a film.

He was angry because I was late. He had been waiting for me for half an hour.

Future Perfect Continuous

Future Perfect Continuous is used to show that something will continue up until a particular event or time in the future. The duration stops at or before a reference point in the future.

I will not have been playing

I won’t have been playing

Will I have been playing?

*will can be replaced with “going to”

Examples:

How long will you have been studying when you graduate?

You will have been waiting for more than two hours when his plane finally arrives.

She is going to have been working at that company for three years when she leaves.
