Although, in spite of, despite

although, though, even though, in spite of, despite”are all similar in meaning. 

We use them to show contrast or something unexpected. 

although, though, even though = conjunctions

whereas,

in spite of, despite = prepositions

although + clause

More common in formal and written language.

Although it was raining we went out.

We went out although it was raining.

though + clause

More common in informal and spoken language.

Though it was raining we went out.

We went out though it was raining.

even though + clause

A stronger form of although and though.

Even though it was raining we went out.

We went out even though it was raining.

in spite of+ noun

+ pronoun (this, that, what etc.)

+ noun phrase, -ing

In spite of the rain we went out.

We went out in spite of the rain.

In spite of what she said we were still friends.

In spite of skiing all day, I was full of energy.

despite + noun
